Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20th 1964) was an American politician, attorney and vice president of United States. She is both the first female vice-president and the highest-ranking female official of the United States. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she was an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After starting her career as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Later she became the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she was elected the district attorney of San Francisco. Harris was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010, and then re-elected in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Martinez in the 2016 Senate election, becoming the second African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for healthcare reform, federal descheduling for cannabis, a pathway for immigrants who are not legal citizens and the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. Harris also backed progressive tax reform. National attention was gained for her shrewd questions of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings. This included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual abuse.
